Research on learners with performance problems at SIU will be presented. Then participants will learn Gordon’s Prerogatives Model as an approach to dealing with their own learners with performance problems.

Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
1) Identify the prevalence of learner performance problems
2) Discuss a model for identifying learners with performance problems
3) Adapt the model to their own practice

Problem Based Learning Workshop

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine will offer its Problem Based Learning  workshop June 14-17, 2011 at its Springfield Illinois campus. Intended audience includes

Problem Based Learning uses the messy, complex clinical problems encountered in the real world to stimulate new learning and to focus integration and application of
information already learned.  Medical students in a PBL curriculum solidify their knowledge of basic sciences by learning to apply them to clinical problems.  This workshop will focus on teaching medical educators to implement a Problem Based Learning curriculum.

SIU has been at the forefront of Problem Based Learning since its inception.  Dr. Howard Barrows, the physician instrumental in creating Problem Based Learning, was in
residence at SIU until his retirement.  This PBL workshop is based on his work, and will allow participants to experience PBL in its most classical sense, as well as discuss changes to the classical format for today's curricula.

The SIU School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 31.5 AMA PRA Category 1 credits ™.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Southern Illinois University School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.
