SIUSOM Sweeps Inaugural ASPIRE Awards

At its 2013 annual meeting in Prague, the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE) recognized SIU School of Medicine for excellence in three areas: Student Engagement, Assessment, and Social Accountability.

This recognition was awarded by the ASPIRE program (http://www.aspire-to-excellence.org), which was developed to reward medical schools for their devotion to excellence in teaching and learning. This year was the first in which rigorous peer evaluation criteria, developed by an international panel and piloted with volunteer medical schools (including SIUSOM), were applied to assess a diverse pool of international medical school applicants. SIUSOM was the only school to win an award in all three categories evaluated.

In collaboration with SIUSOM students, Dr. Debra Klamen, Associate Dean for Education and Curriculum and Chair of the Medical Education Department, prepared the extensive application for each award. Dr. Anna Cianciolo, Assistant Professor of Medical Education, accepted the awards at the annual meeting on behalf of the school.
